Winter Wool Project benefits

Community members can contribute towards the project until the end of July.

As the chill of winter sets in, the Boksburg Advertiser’s annual winter wool drive continues to bring warmth and hope to those who need it most.

This year, one of the campaign’s first beneficiaries is the Church of the Nazarene (COTN), which recently received a generous donation of wool to support its ongoing outreach efforts.

The church, which runs several projects throughout the year to uplift the underprivileged, is focused on its winter warmer outreach, which will take place in June.

Members of the congregation are hard at work knitting beanies and gloves to distribute to job seekers who gather along Dudley Smith and Kingfisher roads, hoping for daily work.

Karen Keen, who is actively involved in the church’s outreach, expressed her gratitude for the donation. “This wool will help us create much-needed winter items for our June outreach, where we give out clothing, shoes, and hope jars to those in need.”

She said COTN is deeply involved in several charitable efforts throughout the year.

“These include distributing comfort toys to vulnerable communities such as the East Rand chaplaincy services, Cedar Manor (a rape crisis centre), and Hope Ithemba, a pregnancy crisis centre.”

Behind many of these handmade gifts is a group of dedicated women from the Nifty Needles group at Alan Woodrow in Boksburg.

“These remarkable ladies, some in their late 80s and 90s, continue to put their skills to good use, knitting and sewing items of comfort for babies and others in need,” she added.

The church has also launched a skills programme focused on hand sewing and knitting, offering community members the opportunity to learn and contribute.

“Every donation helps us extend our reach and continue making a difference in the lives of others,” Keen added.

About the winter wool drive
The Boksburg Advertiser’s wool drive, running from May 1 to July 3, collects wool donations of all kinds – new, old, or leftover – as well as completed knitted items such as scarves, beanies, and blankets. These are distributed to local individuals and groups who use their crafting talents to help those less fortunate stay warm during the cold months.

Project coordinator Elize Kluyts, advertising manager at the Advertiser, encourages the community to get involved.
