Nurse shares journey from cleaning to caring
Nurse Anise Basson has journeyed through healthcare with the power of determination and a caring heart.
In celebration of International Nurses Day (May 12), we shine a spotlight on Anise Basson’s inspirational career, whose path in healthcare is proof of hard work, growth and dedication.
Basson’s journey in healthcare showcases her perseverance, resilience and passion for serving others.
She began her career at the Sunward Park Hospital as a housekeeper.
“I started as a housekeeper, ensuring the hospital environment was clean and safe for patients.”
Her diligence and attention to detail did not go unnoticed, leading to a promotion to ward hostess.
“As a ward hostess, I ensured patients were comfortable, served them something to drink, and assisted during visiting hours. It was an opportunity to connect with patients and support them during their stay.
“After several years of service, I stepped away from my career to focus on being a stay-at-home mom for seven years. I took a break to raise my children, but always knew I would return to healthcare.”
In 2005, Basson joined Netcare Lindmed in Benoni as a receptionist, where her healthcare journey took an exciting turn. Recognising her potential, the staff encouraged her to study further.
“They motivated me to start an in-service training programme offered by the company while working. After four years of completing my studies, I worked in the ICU. I loved every moment of it. It was then that I found my passion for occupational health.”

Basoon’s commitment to learning didn’t stop there. She completed several short courses, expanding her expertise in various areas of healthcare. Her dedication eventually led her to the field of occupational health, where she felt she could make a real impact.

“I realised I could help patients and healthcare workers take care of their health,” she said.
After many years as a fixed-term contractor, Netcare recognised Basson’s hard work and dedication. At the end of her contract, the hospital offered her a permanent position as the occupational health sister for the Netcare East Rand Cluster Hospital.
“After Covid-19, it became clear that healthcare workers struggled to care for their health. I am responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of the nursing staff at the Netcare Sunward Park Hospital, the Lindmed, N17 and Lakeview. I work rotationally.”
In this role, Basson ensures healthcare staff comply with health and safety standards, focusing on physical, mental and emotional well-being.
“I’m proud of the work I did to support healthcare workers, especially during difficult times,” she said.
Looking to her retirement, Basson reflects on her journey with gratitude.
“Netcare uplifted me at every stage of my career. From starting as a housekeeper to becoming an occupational health sister, I’ve always felt supported. This hospital has truly become my home. I will work here until retirement.”
