Armed robbers still at large after mall jewellery store robbery

They reportedly fled the scene in a blue Volkswagen Polo.

Police are still searching for a group of five men who escaped with an undisclosed quantity of jewellery during a robbery at Jewellery Club, located at East Rand Mall.

It was around 09:30 on February 11 when the criminals, one of whom was carrying a firearm, stormed the store and held staff at gunpoint. They then stole jewellery from the display cabinets, exited the mall and fled the scene using their getaway car, believed to be a blue Volkswagen Polo.

According to East Rand Mall management, amid the armed hold-up, store staff activated the store’s smoke alarm as a precautionary security measure. It appears this prompted the robbers to leave with their loot.

While no shots were fired and no injuries were reported during the incident, one staff member received precautionary medical assistance after inhaling smoke caused by the activated alarm system.

“Legendary Guardians, the mall’s armed response team, immediately deployed two vehicles to the scene to secure the area. The getaway vehicle’s registration details are being traced, and centre management is working closely with all relevant role players to assist in tracking efforts,” explained the mall marketing manager, Tshepiso Kgowana.

She said the mall remains committed to the safety and security of its tenants, staff, and shoppers and will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities and security partners in this regard.
