Four accused back in court as families await answers
The bail proceedings of four men accused in connection with the deaths of two civilians and two Anti-Gang Unit officers have been postponed, while one accused also faces scrutiny over an alleged cellphone incident in prison.
The bail proceedings of Regan Collis (23), Jamal Meyer (24), Alvino Crawford (27) and Mcfoolen Ford (26) were postponed in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on September 23, with the matter now set down for October 6.
The four men face allegations linked to the fatal shooting that claimed the lives of Jaydin Magerman (27), Roleen Lessing (31), and Anti-Gang Unit members Constables Thapelo Tlomatsane and Sphiwe Sibeko.
Attorneys Samkele Kuzani, who represents the first three accused, and Viara Thatcher, who represents Ford, agreed to the postponement.
The first three accused are being held at Boksburg Correctional Services, while Ford is being held at Modderbee Correctional Services.
State prosecutor Sipho Kuthwana told the court that Collis had allegedly been found in possession of a cellphone in prison.
Kuthwana said the alleged conduct was concerning and indicated that the State could take further action.
Kuzani acknowledged the affidavit from correctional services but argued that it should not form part of the bail application because it had not been served in time.
The magistrate said the issue would be dealt with on October 6, as the information had only recently been brought to the court’s attention.
Outside the court, the proceedings remained deeply personal for the families of those who died.
The families of Magerman and Lessing, who declined to comment separately, gave the same response when approached by the Boksburg Advertiser.
“We still feel angry, and we just want to know what happened to them.”
Michaela Collis, sister of accused Collis, also raised concerns about alleged threats against her family.
“They are saying that they are still coming for us,” she alleged.
It is also alleged that a live video containing threats against the Collis family has been circulating on social media.
These allegations have not been tested in court.
The bail proceedings will resume on October 6, when the court is expected to hear the outstanding matters.
