Botha, Maisa excel at Boksburg Athletic Club’s annual Steve de Bod Mile Challenge
With another year of spirited racing in the books, the Steve de Bod Mile Challenge remains a fitting tribute to the running icon whose legacy continues to inspire athletes across Boksburg and beyond.
The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) recently celebrated another memorable edition of the Steve de Bod Mile Challenge, as athletes of all ages braved steady rain to test their speed, stamina and spirit on the Boksburg Stadium’s tartan track.
Keegan Botha claimed overall victory in a swift 04:38, while Zanele Maisa took top honours in the women’s race with an impressive 05:05.

Their strong performances capped off an evening that blended competitive racing with the camaraderie and community spirit for which the event is known.

Now firmly entrenched as a highlight on the club’s annual calendar, the mile challenge again drew a lively mix of seasoned runners, rising stars and social athletes, from those chasing the elusive four-minute milestone to newcomers simply eager to notch up a personal best. The weather may have been gloomy, but the atmosphere was anything but.
Gary Corin, BAC chairperson, thanked the team behind the scenes, which kept the long-standing tradition running smoothly.

“On behalf of the BAC, I thank Steve Hugo, Bertus Nienaber, Deirdre Ferreira and Caronn Harris for ensuring another successful Steve de Bod Mile Challenge. Despite the rain, we had a great turnout of young and less young athletes, all showing their prowess over four laps. What a way to honour the ethos of a BAC legend, Steve de Bod himself. Long may this tradition continue,” he said.
