The third edition of the annual Benoni Northerns Football Club (BNFC) junior tournament proved a resounding success, with more than 70 teams converging for an action-packed two-day spectacle on March 21 and 22.

Parents and football enthusiasts turned out in numbers, lining the sidelines and creating a vibrant atmosphere as the young stars showcased their skills and passion for the game.

Tournament organiser Justin dos Santos hailed the event as another major step forward for the growing competition.

“It was another successful tournament. Though we did not have as many teams as I would have liked, it has grown from 71 in our first season to over 100. Everything has got better and better,” said dos Santos.

Despite overnight rain leaving parts of the pitch waterlogged and forcing the cancellation of the U15 fixtures, the tournament maintained its momentum.

Dos Santos noted that the feedback from participating teams remained overwhelmingly positive – a clear indication that the competition, launched just last year, continues to gain traction.

“It was a great tournament. Everyone enjoyed it. The players, coaches and parents all loved it. They were super happy that we did what we could to ensure it went ahead despite the rain,” he added.

On the field, the competition delivered plenty of excitement across the age groups. Juzz Sports claimed the U7 title, while Tshiama dominated the U8 and U10 divisions.

Hosts BNFC celebrated victories in the U9 and U12 categories, Rovers lifted the U11 trophy, and Kitoko Soccer Schools emerged victorious in the U13 division.

Dos Santos also expressed his gratitude to Bad Boyz Security for maintaining a safe environment and to the paramedics for their commitment to player welfare.

He further acknowledged the efforts of the BNFC committee, his organising team, and sponsors – including Pick n Pay Oakfields, Shield, Omoda and Crazy Plastics – whose support ensured the continued success and growth of the tournament.
