Local soccer legends reunite for Reiger Park El Clásico
Some of the biggest local clubs take to the field to relive their fierce historic rivalry.
WJ Clements Stadium in Reiger Park was a hive of activity on September 20 as locals came to watch former players of some of the biggest local clubs take to the field to relive their fierce historic rivalry.
The second edition of the exciting event, the Reiger Park El Clásico Legends Reunion, featured local clubs renowned for their historic contributions to football, such as Reiger Park Juventus FC, Boksburg Pirates FC, Sun United, and Boksburg Guild.
The clubs went head-to-head in the tournament organised to thrill fans and allow the figures in local football history to rekindle their love of the sport.
This historic reunion not only celebrated the legacy of the four local football clubs but also served as a celebration of Heritage Month for the community.

Young footballers from the local teams took advantage of the event to interact with some of their football legends.
The event kicked off at 13:00 with Reiger Park Juventus FC taking on Boksburg Pirates FC in the first semi-final, which ended 2-3 for the Reiger Park team.

Sun United and Boksburg Guild faced each other in the second semi-final match, with Sun United emerging victorious with 2-1.
The final was between Sun United and Reiger Park Juventus, ending 2-2. This encounter ended in a 4-3 victory for Sun United in the penalty shoot-out.

Success
Event organisers described the event as a big success with a good turnout. It brought back memories for Boksburg football fans and raised funds through the entrance fee to alleviate the burden of public facility maintenance.
“We donated the money raised to the LFA and BCFA for the upliftment of our junior soccer structure,” said Sydney Chipitura, an event organiser.
This was the second Reiger Park El Clásico, with the previous one held in 2019.
“In conjunction with the Boksburg and Central Football Association, we plan to make this an annual event. We had a decent crowd in attendance, and although many of the older players experienced sore bodies the following day, everyone had a great time.”
Among the attendees were community leaders and iconic soccer legends, including Ward 34 Clr Edith Klassen from the Patriotic Alliance, who sponsored the medals and trophies, and former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates player Michael Meudane, who also previously served as a coach for several football clubs in the country and abroad.

Lifetime awards
Klassen also handed over 15 lifetime awards, sponsored by the four participating teams, to honour past and present members.
“As old teammates and opponents stretching back to the 90s, we had a reunion of old friends and teams, and the then administrators, to rekindle the old memories,” said Chipitura.
“We decided on the name El Clásico because it represents diversity within our community. We want to celebrate this as part of our heritage, reminding us of ubuntu in the past and how we can revive it among young and old in our community.
