Reiger Park Secondary pass rate improves slightly
According to the school's acting principal, the challenges of poor attendance among learners and lack of parental involvement remain major setbacks to the success of children.
Reiger Park Secondary School Class of 2021 achieved a 62.1% overall pass rate, a slight improvement from the 59% delivered the previous year.
The school obtained 32 distinctions, 37 bachelor’s degree passes, 53 diploma passes and 18 high certificate passes. Awelani Muthelo emerged as the school’s top achievers with four distinctions.
However, school management has indicated that it’s not pleased with the pass rate as this is far below their target.
According to acting principal Raymond Tekana, they aimed to surpass their 2019 pass rate (71%) and maintain the upward trend that started when they improved their results from the 63% in 2018.
This is after the school dropped its performance, following the sex scandal which rocked the school during that year.
Parental involvement could change the course
Lack of parental involvement and the problem of poor learner attendance, for the matric programmes in particular, have been cited as some of the biggest contributing factors to the unsatisfactory academic performance at the school.
Tekana pointed out that the school has highly experienced and dedicated teachers who are doing their utmost best to help learners, but the challenges of poor attendance among learners and lack of parental involvement remain major setbacks to the success of children.
He said, although school management do engage learners and parents, many parents are not getting involved in their children’s education or school-related matters.
“Some learners failed to attend the matric programmes, which were designed to help them improve their performance. There are also recent instances when we have had to rerun parents’ meetings because the majority of the parents failed to attend.”
Tekana indicated they are looking at other means of encouraging parental involvement and making them understand the huge role parental involvement plays in learner motivation and academic success of their children.
