Public urged to get the flu jab

The Health Department recommends that individuals receive a flu vaccination.

The Department of Health released a statement recently urging people to get vaccinated against the flu, as South Africa faces the peak of the Syncytial virus (RSV) and the expectation of an increase in influenza cases while the prevalence of Covid-19 still affects people.

In response, the Tambo Memorial Hospital confirmed and urged community members to take precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones against respiratory infections, which are expected to increase during this winter season.

Tambo Memorial Hospital motivates people to vaccinate
Flu vaccines are offered free of charge at public clinics, so individuals, especially those at high risk such as those aged 65 and above, people with underlying health conditions like heart and lung diseases, individuals living with HIV and TB, and pregnant women, are encouraged to get vaccinated.

The vaccine helps prevent severe health complications if they contract the respiratory syncytial virus. All public clinics provide flu vaccines and Tambo Memorial Hospital also offers the flu vaccine. Affected people are advised to visit their nearest healthcare facilities.

Take precautions like covering your nose when coughing or sneezing, staying at home when you are sick, not touching your face with unwashed hands, avoiding close contact with others when sick, avoiding shaking hands, kissing and sharing eating utensils.

The difference between RSV and Covid-19
Although these two may appear similar due to common symptoms, they are different. The department issued another statement on April 30 dismissing fake news about a new Covid variant and promised to communicate if there are concerns.
