Whine and Wine, a soothing social event for women in Brakpan

Ladies enjoy a few drinks, good food and conversation, and an opportunity to create something beautiful.

Whine and Wine events have no script. Women come together, paint according to a loose theme, enjoy a few drinks and chat about whatever they feel like.

The theme on September 27 was Carnival, and women painted anything that evoked the sense of being at a carnival.

There are no rules – you could paint an argyle pattern or stripes. The idea is that you get to spend time with friends, be creative and relax.

Anneke Bothma hosted the Whine and Wine events since December. So far, she organised seven of these events. This time 40 women came together to have a great time at Anneke’s house in Sonneveld.

Michelle Miles and Annelize Potgieter warmed their backs at the fireplace.

Mini burgers and corn dogs, a roaring fireplace, various kinds of wines and artisanal gin greeted the ladies as they entered the home. Ellie van Heerden, a first-time guest, said the vibe is very convivial and sociable.

“I like the idea that you can do your own thing, and you don’t have to all paint the same picture, like with other painting evenings,” she said.

Anneke started this event because she saw a need among women to have an opportunity to relax among friends and create something while enjoying wine and good food.

“In my job as a family and life coach, I’ve noticed that if it goes well with mom, it goes well with the whole family,” she said.

Anneke and her mother, Anette Smit, prepare the food they serve and can take an entire day to cook it. Anneke is even prepared for load-shedding, with battery lamps on each table and candles on standby if needed.

When the power went off at 20:00, the ladies continued with their painting and chatting. Anneke does not want to expand the event to cater to more people because she feels the intimacy and heart of the event would be lost.

She does encourage other women to get their friends together and do something similar.

The emphasis of the event is on the intimacy and togetherness of the women that attend. They need to spend quality time with themselves and close friends to be healthy.

Ladies grabbed watercolor paper, wood backboard, pencils and paint and started drawing after dinner.

“Moms’ emotional buckets need a refill so they can better care for their families. These evenings are an opportunity to spend a few hours forgetting all their challenges and stress,” she said.

While space is limited to 45 spots, anyone is welcome to book their space for the events on October 11, November 24 and December 7.

Spots are first come, first served.

The event will be from 18:00, and the fee for food, art supplies and drinks is R350. For more information, contact Anneke on 067 014 3086.
