Court hears guilty plea in crash that claimed Malcolm Booysen’s life

More than a year after 14-year-old Malcolm Booysen was killed, the underage driver has pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and driving without a licence. Sentencing proceedings continue in August.

The underage driver accused of striking and killing 14-year-old Malcolm Booysen last year appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on June 30, where he pleaded guilty to charges of culpable homicide and driving without a licence.

The accused cannot be identified because he is a minor. He is expected to return to court on August 25 for a pre-sentence and correctional supervision report.

Brakpan police confirmed that consultations with social workers and correctional services are currently under way ahead of sentencing.

Malcolm was killed on June 7, 2025, when he was struck by a vehicle at the corner of Northdene Avenue and Madeley Street.

The incident attracted widespread attention because the driver was a 12-year-old boy. Officers from the EMPD Accident Bureau responded to the scene at about 13:45.

Malcolm was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. It was alleged at the time that the driver failed to stop at a stop sign before colliding with Malcolm.

Following the incident, the driver was handed in, accompanied by his guardian, to the Brakpan SAPS
The guilty plea comes just weeks after the first anniversary of Malcolm’s death.
