Tale of two tigers

Ozzy, an eight-month-old Siberian tiger, is the newest, adorable addition to the family of Brakpan North couple, Michael Jamison and Jackie Smits.

This latest addition to the family is definitely not a strange one, in view of the fact that the couple has been the proud owners of another and rather famous tiger, Enzo, since 2011.
Michael was asked to take in the ill tiger in February.

According to Jackie, he hadn’t been given enough vitamins and calcium by his previous owner and this caused his legs to break due to his bones being very fragile.
Michael explained that these animals need a large calcium intake to accommodate their rapid growth.
For two months, he had to carry Ozzy around the house as he could not walk.

He is, however, hoping this will not be necessary and explained that the tiger has already made a remarkable recovery.
His bone density has recovered significantly and it is only the form thereof that is still a problem.
This exotic and playful animal has already crawled deep into the couple’s hearts.

“He is quite naughty,” Michael said with a laugh.
According to him, Enzo is disciplined, whereas Ozzy still takes chances.
Because of his bone problems, he gets away with murder, added Jackie.
The couple says that Ozzy and Enzo get along well.
They are just waiting for Ozzys recovery, to allow the two animals to interact more with each other.
Ozzy eats about 10kg of chicken fillet each day and sleeps in bed with his owners, which Enzo used to do.
When the Herald last visited Enzo, he was 15 months old and weighed 200kg.

Now he is two years old and weighs about 250 to 260kg.
“They are fully grown at about three years old”, said Michael.
Ozzy enjoys swimming and being lazy throughout the day.
Jackie added that they are happy, and that they get plenty of local visitors who come to see their exotic pets.
Although Enzo and Ozzy are their pets, the couple agrees that they are more their sons.
“They are very special”, said Michael.
