Insist on identification

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality strongly advises homeowners to insist on an identity card from anyone who claims to be an employee of the metro, prior to them gaining entry or commencing work on the premises.

“The metro wishes to assure residents that all its contractors, including meter readers, have a municipal identity card, bearing their photo, and they are to present the card at any business or private premises they visit to do a job,” said municipal spokesperson Sam Modiba.

The assurance comes after an incident in Bedfordview, when an alleged robber impersonated a municipal meter reader, thereby raising questions on the identification of municipal field workers.

“We have an obligation to ensure that our employees and contractors produce positive identification; in the same breath we request residents to be vigilant and to request positive identification,” added Modiba.

“ If they are not satisfied, residents have the right to phone the Emergency Call Centre on 011-458-0911 or 10177, or, when using cell phones, to dial 112 (fire, ambulance and Metro Police).”

Other important numbers community members should be aware of include the Ekurhuleni Municipal Service Complaints line on 0860 543-000, the SAPS Flying Squad on 10111, and their local police station.
