Busy week for EMPD
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department issued hundreds of fines for various offences to motorists in Brakpan, last week.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, 120 drivers were issued with fines for not having their driver’s licences with them in their vehicles.
“We urge motorists not to forget their driver’s licences and to have them when driving on a public road,” he said.
“The fine is R500 for light motor vehicles and R2 500 for heavy duty vehicles.
“The worst case scenario would be that the driver is not allowed to continue with his or her trip unless the licence is delivered to where the offence took place, or someone with a valid driver’s licence drives their vehicle.”
Twenty drivers were also fined for not having a valid professional driving permit.
Kgasago told the Herald that other regulations regularly flouted by motorists included not wearing safety belts and not strapping children in securely.
Expired cars licences and parking and stopping violations were also common.
“We urge drivers to avoid inconveniencing other motorists by double parking or stopping in a manner that would endanger other road users,” said Kgasago.
“Car licences have a grace period of 21 days after the date of expiry and motorists are advised to renew licences in good time as penalties are high and you may be fined on the road.
“Not ensuring that toddlers or children are strapped in is not advisable.
“Adults must also make sure that they fasten their seatbelts as it has been proven that lives can be saved and serious injuries averted in collisions by using safety belts.”
Other fines issued last week were: eight for red robot violations, 35 for not fastening safety belts, six for disregarding yield and stop signs, 50 for expired vehicle licences, four for not having a roadworthy certificate, three for using cellphones without a hands-free kit and 72 for parking and stopping offences.
Eleven fines were issued for failure to display number plates and 26 for defective tyres, lights and brakes.
In addition, two drivers were arrested for suspected drunken driving.
Six accidents were recorded by EMPD officers, none of which resulted in injuries.
The EMPD also issued 356 summonses and 84 notices.
