Brakpan police have urged residents to be considerate of their neighbours, following a rise in disturbance of the peace complaints.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, told the Herald that the station receives disturbance of the peace complaints on a daily basis.

He explained that police have the authority to arrest offenders and to confiscate noise creating devices and instruments.

“It is also not restricted to music and can include shouting, singing, revving cars and operating machinery,” said Joubert.

Complaints can be reported any time and are not restricted to certain hours.

* Residents are warned not to open false cases.

“People fabricate crimes for a number of reasons, the most common of which is to justify a fraudulent insurance claim,” said Joubert.

“The police view this in a very serious light and, if caught, you will be charged with perjury and brought before a court of law.”

* An increase in housebreaking has local police extremely concerned, and they have urged residents to be vigilant.

“People must make sure it is as difficult as possible for criminals to get inside their homes,” said Joubert.

“Make sure you lock your belongings away safely and ensure that outside gates, security gates and doors are locked.

“Windows must be tightly secured.”

The spike in housebreaking also includes vacant properties.

“Empty homes are broken into and stripped of anything of value, such as taps and pipes,” said Joubert.

“We urge second-hand dealers who are approached to buy any suspicious items to contact us immediately.”
