The metro labelled the SMS a hoax, saying it is untrue and unfounded.

“Residents can rest assured that there is no planned water supply interruption in the mentioned areas,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The hoax message reads[sic]:
Morning Springs res, we have been informed by Rand Water Board that ff area: Springs, Nigel and Brakpan will run out of water till further notice. But some area will have water due especially low area not specified. Water Tankers will be stationed in various Hall, Civic, Shops. This momemt the water in Springs next CBD is out and Nigel. Please save as much water as you can. Till the problem solve. That also counted as Brakpan, Springs and Nigel. Area like township included Brakpan (Reedville; Brenthurst; Dalpark etc) Springs (Includes Suburbs and townships) and Nigel also.
