Caxton Reynolds Race heats up

The eight Caxton Reynolds Race 2014 teams braved the strong winds on Saturday, last week, to compete against each other for the top points and the trip to Zanzibar.

The second round of the competition was held at Reynolds Travel Centre, which is situated at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Fourth Street, Springs.

Teams had to complete eight tasks and each had to be completed in one minute and 30 seconds.

All the tasks for the day were set up to help educate the contestants about Zanzibar.

The tasks were as follows:

* Using a syringe, one contestant had to suck up and transfer custard out of a glass into a tumbler using one hand. This represented the yellow fever vaccination one needs to get before going to Zanzibar.

* The contestants sang an original Queen song for a karaoke competition. This represented Freddy Mercury, who was born in Zanzibar.

* Participants had to taste and name four different spices from Zanzibar. This represented Zanzibar’s other name – the Spice Island.

* A blank outline of the Tanzanian flag was given to the participants, who had to colour in the flag with the correct colours.

* Contestants were given Swahili words with the English translation, and had to form a full sentence in Swahili, which is Zanzibar’s national language.

* Contestants were shown four different currencies and had to choose the correct currency for Zanzibar to advance to the next task.

* Contestants played “Umgusha”, an indigenous game similar to skipping and hopscotch.

* One contestant held a pole with a bucket on each end of their shoulders while the other filled each bucket with stones making them balance equally. Once this was done, they raced from point A to point B without dropping the buckets or the stones. This represented Stone Town in Zanzibar.

The third round of this competition will be held at Hirsch’s Meadowdale, tomorrow (Saturday).

The three teams with the most points by the end of the seventh week will go into the finals, which will be held in Springs, on Saturday, August 2.
