Update: Workers arrested for strike violence

Truck driver and passenger pulled from vehicle, assaulted and robbed.

Brakpan police have arrested 12 people following this morning’s strike related violence in Vulcania.

The arrests were made after a truck was damaged by striking workers believed to be affiliated to trade union Numsa.

A police source, who cannot be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, told the Herald that the truck’s driver and a passenger were assaulted by the striking workers.

“The strikers stopped the truck, grabbed the pair and pulled them into the crowd,” he said.

“They managed to run away, but were assaulted and robbed of their money and cellphones.”
