R1.4-m copper cable bust

Three directors of a scrap metal company, in Vulcania, were among five people arrested by Brakpan police, last week, for being in possession of stolen copper cables.

The cables, worth about R1.4-million, belong to Johannesburg City Power.

According to Lieut Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North SAPS, Brakpan police visited the address on Wednesday evening, at about 6.30pm, after receiving a tip-off.

“Arriving on the scene in Lemmer Road, they found stolen copper cables, some of which had already been stripped” she said.

“Others were still in their casing.”

The three directors, as well as two other men, were arrested.

Police confiscated three bakkies, three grinders and one cable stripper machine.

“They also found a cash amount of R98 876 which was meant for another load of copper, but it did not reach the premises,” added Coetzer.

The men face charges of being in possession of stolen property.
