Early childhood development in the spotlight

“The balance of mental and physical development of children is the nucleus of their growth. Prioritizing early childhood development is the only way that we can get this balance right," said Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele.

It is for this reason that the City of Ekurhuleni’s Health and Social Development Department will host a two day Early Childhood Development (ECD) Indaba to be held at the Alberton Civic Center today (Monday) and at the Katlehong Change Bible Church tomorrow.

The purpose of the Indaba, themed “Together creating new opportunities for our children”, is to address and improve existing challenges in ECD services.

Poverty and an unstable family environment increase the chances of a child’s development problems.

Therefore it is important to improve the quality of the ECD services which are designed to give adequate support to struggling parents and ensure that all children are nurtured in the the early years of their lives.

The key themes at the Indaba include Health, Sports and Recreation, Early Childhood Education and other key factors that play an important role in a child’s development and growth.

A total of 600 ECD practitioners will be attending the Indaba, after which they will receive an NQF Level 4 certificate of recognition for participation in the programme.
