The Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko, officially launched a rehabilitation centre for substance abuse users at the Witpoort Treatment Centre, in Vulcania, on Friday.
Dr Nilesh Patel, chief operating executive of healthcare services for Live Healthcare, was one of the speakers at the opening of the Witpoort rehabilitation centre.
The Gauteng Social Development Department has partnered with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) to convert old clinics into substance abuse community based day-clinics to increase the accessibility of treatment interventions.
The Witpoort Treatment Centre will offer treatment for nyaope abusers who often experience severe physical discomfort during detoxification and will alleviate the pressure on the current in-patient treatment centres.
Ekurhuleni MMC for Social Development, clr Khosi Maluleke, was present at the opening and during her address said that the youth of Ekurhuleni should not be left outside in the cold to take drugs but should be encouraged to use centres like Witpoort to get help.
