Cat-astrophe avoided after feline is rescued

A stranded cat has all four of its paws safely back on solid ground, thanks to a 72-year-old Brenthurst resident.

Danny Pierce, who lives along Prince George Avenue, didn’t think twice about rescuing the helpless feline from atop a box on a telephone pole, during a heavy downpour on Wednesday afternoon, last week.

Danny’s granddaughter, Melany Bruwer, explained to the Herald that the cat was drenched by the time they realised it was there.

“Since the telephone pole is not in our yard it was not just a matter of getting a ladder and rescuing the cat,” she said.

“The telephone pole is situated in the yard behind us and my grandfather decided to get two ladders, placing one in our yard in order to get onto the wall and the other in the yard next to us.

“While also being drenched with rain, he climbed up the ladder onto the wall, onto the next ladder and got the cat off the box.

“The cat, which was very scared by now, climbed onto my grandfather’s back and clung for dear life.

“My grandfather climbed down the ladder and once they reached the wall the cat jumped off his back and made his way back home.”

Melany was in awe of her grandfather’s actions.

“My grandfather has always been an animal lover, but today I realised just how much he loves them,” she said.

“He had a stroke about eight years ago, after which his right hand was slightly weak.

“He also had a hip replacement about a year ago.

“This old man has been around the block, but he made me realise that age is just a number and that any obstacle can be overcome.”
