Court hands down additional sentence to prison inmate
Prisoner linked to the crimes through his fingerprints.
A 44-year-old prison inmate, already serving time for business robbery, will be spending more time behind bars after he was sentenced again – this time for house robbery.
Simon Mpubane, who received a 23-year prison sentence in 2009 for the robbery of a business in KwaThema, received an additional 15 years after he was found guilty on two counts of house robbery.
The robberies took place in Brakpan.
“In January 2007, a house along Jim Vining Street, in Minnebron, was robbed of cellphones and electrical appliances to the value of R32 000,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.
“Two vehicles were also stolen during the robbery, a Toyota Conquest and a Toyota Corolla.
“The second incident took place in December 2008, when a house in Witpoortjie Street, Rand Collieries, was robbed of electrical appliances valued at R6 000.
“A Mitsubishi Outlander SUV was also taken.”
Joubert told the Herald that Mpubane was linked to the crimes in September, last year, through his fingerprints.
He appeared in the Brakpan Regional Court for sentencing on March 10 and received 20 and 25-year sentences respectively.
“It was ordered that 10 years of the sentence on count two shall run concurrently with the sentence he is already serving,” said Joubert.
“An effective 15 years imprisonment was added to the sentence he is serving.”
Mpubane was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The investigating officer was Det Sgt Sibusiso Xaba.
