Domestic worker tied up during robbery

One of the men told her to keep quiet, while the other encouraged his accomplice to shoot her.

Two men tied up a domestic worker during a robbery at her employer’s house on Wednesday, last week.

The robbery took place at a residence along Masefield Street, Dalpark, at about 12.15pm.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the woman (age not provided) was outside bringing in clothes from the washing line, when two men confronted her.

One of the men told her to keep quiet, while the other encouraged his accomplice to shoot her.

The men took the woman into the house, where they tied her hands and feet with cables.

She was then pushed into a room and left there.

After she could no longer hear the men in the house, the domestic worker screamed for help.

A neighbour came to her assistance and the police and homeowner were called.

Three television sets and a cellphone were among the items stolen from the house.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, told the Herald that police would like to establish a forum for domestic workers.

“Most households in Brakpan have a domestic worker employed, and it would be a great platform to spread awareness about crime and share safety tips,” he said.

“Domestic workers can also be very valuable when it comes to being the eyes and the ears of the police.

“If we can get such a forum off the ground we will meet on a regular basis to exchange ideas and information.”

He provided the following safety tips for domestic workers:

• When alone at home make sure that all the doors and windows are closed and locked.

• Do not allow anyone onto the property before confirming with the homeowner that they are expected.

• Be careful when hanging up or bringing in washing as criminals can jump over the wall and attack you. This also applies to taking out and bringing in rubbish bins. Be quick when you are outside and go back into the house and lock the door.

• If there is a panic button, carry it at all times, preferably where it is not visible.

• Make sure you know an emergency number and the address where you are.

• Do not trust anyone and don’t give out any information about the property or your employers.
