EMPD gets tough on illegal businesses

Fines of R2 000 were issued.

Transforming residential houses to businesses without following the correct procedures and causing untold problems for law-abiding residents, prompted the EMPD to crackdown on all offenders in the Brakpan CBD and surrounding suburbs.

The special operation, which was held in conjunction with Environmental Health officials, took place on Saturday, last week, between 8am and 1pm.

Some of the illegal operating businesses included recycling yards, panel-beating and spray-painting plants.

Not only are these businesses an eyesore in residential areas, but they also cause a health hazard in the form of noise pollution and inhalation of chemicals used.

“The law-enforcers were compelled to shut down the businesses and issue written warnings,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago.

Fines of R2 000 were issued to all offenders by the Environmental Health officials.

Offenders were also issued with written warnings affording them seven days to clean up their act.

All the offenders issued with fines and given seven days to comply will be re-visited to ensure that the illegal activities are halted.
