Pollution is a challenge

The Herald has received comment from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality regarding pollution at the Brakpan Dam and quarry.

The Herald has received comment from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality regarding a letter that was published in the Herald’s June 10 edition, titled ‘Dam is health hazard’.

In the letter, Dougie Douglas complained about pollution at the Brakpan Dam and quarry.

According to Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the water surface is cleaned as and when required.

“However, the indirect pollution that enters the system through wind, and the stormwater discharge remains a challenge,” he said.

“The dam is also next to Erwat sewer works and from time to time the sewer blockages end up in the dam.

“The algae and hyacinth is controlled with chemical control herbicides that assists with slowing down growth.”
