With the intent to raise awareness, educate communities and increase understanding about public participation processes, the Ekurhuleni Legislature embarked on a roadshow to different areas in Ekurhuleni, the first of which recently took place in Tsakane.
The Legislature Imbizo was held under the theme “Working Towards Deepening Participatory Democracy and Meaningful Public Participation” and informed members of the community about the Separation of Powers governance model and how the community integrates with council in planning, decision-making and service delivery.
Delivering the keynote address at the Faranani Multi-Purpose Centre, Alderman Patricia Kumalo (speaker of council) drew on the inception of Separation of Powers at local government level and emphasised its significance in ensuring the city’s development plans are met and benefit the community.
Kumalo also emphasised the role of Legislature as the institution that represents the people’s interest through its mandate consisting of three focus areas, which are by-law making, oversight and public participation.
Following a robust question-and-answer session, Kumalo thanked the community for attending the meeting and outlining issues that were most urgent to them.
“The communities are our first priority. We must have a clear understanding of their needs and through these engagements we are able to ensure effective public involvement which has the greatest weight in council decisions,” she said.
