Man sentenced for butchery robbery
A former worker at a butchery in Withok Estates was last month sentenced to a lengthy prison stay for robbing his employers.
Zandile Peter Mahlangu (42) from KwaThema was one of three men who robbed the Mans Street butchery on January 30 this year.
According to information received from Brakpan police, Mahlangu and his accomplices arrived at the business at around 11am and kicked open the door to the office where they threatened three staff members at gunpoint.
Two of the robbers were wearing balaclavas and the victims were instructed to lie down.
One victim was violently pushed to the floor while the others were kicked as they lay helpless on the ground.
A large sum of cash, a laptop, two cellphones and a purse and wallet each containing cash, a driver’s licence, bank cards and other personal items, were stolen.
The victims were left in a bathroom and the robbers fled the scene.
Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS, told the Herald that Mahlangu was arrested shortly thereafter when a colleague recognised one of the firearms used in the robbery as being similar to one Mahlangu owned or had in his possession.
Mahlangu pleaded guilty to the charge of armed robbery and was handed down a 15-year jail term when he appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court for sentencing on November 28.
The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
Mahlangu is serving his sentence at the Boksburg Prison.
The case was successfully investigated by Det Const Dickson Mofokeng.
