Spotlight: Get to know Ray Mabbutt

Ray Mabbutt is in the spotlight this week.

Brenthurst resident Ray Mabbutt is the Old Bill (chairperson) of the Windy Corner Moth Shellhole in Brakpan and serves as the vice-chairperson of the Brakpan branch of the SA Legion. The 81-year-old has been married to Christina Ann for 62 years and has two children, Karl and Tracey, and four grandchildren.

You are retired. What was your occupation?

I was a sales executive and I’m now an artist.

Tell us a little bit about your military career?

I joined the regular British army and served all over Europe.

After being a Teddy Boy riding motorcycles and getting into trouble a lot, the discipline affected my life very much.

It did me the world of good, but it was hard for an 18-year-old.

I enjoyed the army and boxed for my regiment.

After basic training, I became a sergeant.

How did your military service and experiences affect your life?

It affected my life a great deal, it gave me confidence in myself and taught me how to survive.

How and when did you become involved with the Moth order?

I joined the Moths about 17 years ago at a shellhole called Sphinx.

From there I joined Cosy Corner, which I enjoyed very much and was the Old Bill there for about four years.

I then left for Windy Corner, where the meetings are held on a Saturday afternoon which suits me better than late evening.

How many members does the Windy Corner Shellhole have?

We have 14 members currently, but I have five former soldiers who are keen to join and we are always looking for new members.

Who can join and what are the requirements?

We are looking for “Border Boys” and any ex-servicemen.

We also have a Mothwa, which is the ladies side of the Moths.

Any ex-service personnel can join.

If you apply your application is forwarded to Moths general headquarters for perusal.

Tell us about your involvement with the SA Legion.

I became a member of the legion as the organisation looks after ex-servicemen who are down on their luck and who have nobody.

The Moths and Legion work together for the good of mankind and they are both excellent organisations to join.

Do you have any hobbies or special interests? Elaborate.

While not a hobby or special interest, I am a pastor and chaplain for emergency services.

It is something I am passionate about.

Who are some of your personal heroes, and why?

Jesus Christ. That needs no explanation.
