Renovations at rates hall ‘a disaster waiting to happen’

Recently the entire floor became flooded as there was a water leak.

Concerned ratepayer writes by email:

Each month I go to the municipal offices in Brakpan to pay my utility account.

Since early this year I noticed plumbing contractors installing new amenities in the rates hall/cashier area.

They simply never seem to get finished.

Recently the entire floor became flooded as there was a water leak.

It nearly turned ugly as someone had left a heater on, on the floor (unattended) in the opposite cubicle, and someone could have been electrocuted.

This was just before 1pm.

This “work” has been going on for at least four months, possibly a lot longer.

Obviously, the “plumber” has no clue.

Could the Brakpan Herald please investigate this?

Editor’s note: The Herald requested comment from the City of Ekurhuleni and received the following response from spokesperson Themba Gadebe:

“The work that is currently underway at the Brakpan Customer Care Centre is part of Vuk’uphile Developmental Programme, which is part of the city’s programme to develop emerging contractors,” he said.

“It started in May and the projected completion date is the end of August.

“The work comprises refurbishment which includes alterations to the existing Brakpan Customer Care Centre.

“The reported water pipe burst was an incidental occurrence and was reported and fixed.”
