Stoffberg subway flooding problem to be fixed

Frequent flooding at Stoffberg subway will soon be a thing of the past.

The Ekurhuleni Roads and Stormwater Department has been applauded for attending to the drainage problem at the Stoffberg subway.

Heavy rain usually causes major flooding in this underpass, and numerous motorists have been caught in life-and-death situations.

The subway has been prone to flooding for many years.

In February, heavy rain filled the subway, trapping a taxi driver who underestimated how deep the water was.

The driver was alone in the vehicle after dropping off children he had transported to school.

Only part of the taxi’s roof was visible when emergency services arrived, and the driver was rescued and treated on the scene by paramedics.

Brandon Pretorius, DA councillor for Ward 97 in Brakpan, believes these incidents will soon be a thing of the past.

“After numerous investigations, checks and balances, the roads and stormwater department realised the problem was the collapse of the main drainage pipe under Station Road.

“This caused a blockage which then resulted in the subway flooding.

“The department has dug up the road exposing the collapsed pipe, and is going to replace the drainage pipe entirely to ensure the water can flow freely, and the subway does not flood.

“We would like to thank the Brakpan officials from the roads and storm water department for their continued effort, some of whom take exceptional pride in their work.

“As the Democratic Alliance, we will always keep on applying pressure to the administration to ensure the community receives the service delivery for which they pay,” said Pretorius.
