News of yesteryear
These were some of the local stories making headlines in years gone by.
This week we look back at the Herald of December 7, 2012:
• Orphans enjoy the great spirit of Christmas
Carnival City and the Afrisun Trust spread some Christmas cheer to hundreds of underprivileged children on Monday.
The youngsters, from various orphanages in Ekurhuleni, were treated to a day of non-stop entertainment at a water park.
The 700 children, aged between six and 12 years old, enjoyed a fantasy ‘water world’ complete with water slide, castles and boat rides.
The outdoor games and foam offered the children hours of excitement.
Other activities and attractions included face painting and the opportunity to meet and interact with visiting clowns.
Throughout the day, each child received fresh fruit juice and water and healthy snacks.
This was followed by a nutritious lunch, ice cream and sweets.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the early visit from Santa and Mrs Claus, appropriately laden with gifts galore.
Carnival City and the Afrisun Trust jointly pledged R260 000 for this very worthy initiative.
• SPCA to the rescue
The Brakpan SPCA rushed to the rescue of a trapped dog in Leachville over the weekend.
According to SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore, the female Jack Russell had become wedged between two walls.
“A neighbour told us he had seen her lying there for seven days,” said Finnemore.

“Unfortunately due to the loud music and festivities of residents, she had backed herself up too far for us to reach her.”
Unable to get her out, SPCA staff left the dog with food and a blanket, and returned the following day.
“A much quieter Sunday morning was the key to our success, and we managed to pull her out, coaxing her towards the entrance with a piece of chicken,” said Finnemore.
• Young men killed in accident
Two young men were killed in an accident during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
According to Vanessa Jackson, spokesperson for ER24, paramedics were called out to assist at the scene of the crash, along the R23, near Withok Estates, at about 4am.
“When they arrived at the scene, they found that a white Mini Cooper had collided into a tree,” said Jackson.
“The impact had left the vehicle badly crushed, and the two young men were found trapped in their seats.
“The vehicle appeared to have rolled into the tree, where the roof and sides of the vehicle were extensively damaged.”
The men, both believed to have been in their 20’s, were declared dead at the scene.
