Curro Helderwyk’s state-of-the-art artificial hockey field ready for action

It allows for a faster game with more controlled passing and a far smoother dribbling experience.

Ask any professional hockey player and they all agree there is simply no comparison between artificial turf and grass.

Rising hockey stars at Curro Helderwyk will now get to experience the benefits for themselves, with the school’s very own artificial hockey field having just been completed.

The 5 500m² Turftech artificial pitch is the first FIH (International Hockey Federation) certified hockey field in the Brakpan area.

It allows for a faster game with more controlled passing and a far smoother dribbling experience.

This will be the first time a dedicated hockey field will be available to Curro Helderwyk learners, with both high school and primary school learners able to up their hockey skills on this pristine field.

There are plans afoot to include floodlights in future to incorporate night games and practice sessions, as well as stands for crowds to cheer teams on from the side.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions in place, the official opening of the hockey field had to be delayed until 2021.

The grand opening will see a number of exhibition games being played, including one featuring hockey stars from the University of Johannesburg.

Curro Helderwyk’s director of sport, Dorothy Mthembu, will be taking charge of coaching both the boys’ and girls’ first teams.

Mthembu is active in a number of sports, having represented South Africa at the World Indoor Netball Federation tournament in 2012, and Gauteng schools in both netball and softball.

As director of sport at the school, Mthembu is responsible for overseeing the development and promotion of all the different sports.

This includes tennis, athletics, soccer, netball, rugby, chess, softball, cricket and cross-country.

With the school hockey season set to start in the second quarter of 2021, Curro Helderwyk’s budding hockey players will be able to boot up and pick up their hockey sticks to take to the field at the start of next year.
