Sip ‘n Crochet teaches new skills
The ladies learnt how to seamlessly change from one colour of wool to the next when making granny squares.
Sip ‘n Crochet had its second monthly meeting at the Brakpan Garden and Pet Centre on Springs Road last Saturday.
At the previous meeting, the crocheters, beginners or experts, learnt how to make granny squares uniform enough to put together into a neat blanket, affectionately called a friendship blanket, that will be gifted to a homeless person.
The idea was that different crocheters with various tensions and styles would have the same texture and size of the square so the blanket would look like it was made by one person.

After that meeting, crocheters, cheekily called ‘hookers’ in the past, crocheted as many squares as they could using this technique to put together into these friendship blankets, and they made several squares.
This month, instructor and organiser Heather Bendeman showed the crocheters how to change colours seamlessly in squares.
The exercise aimed to teach the crocheters the neatest technique for attaching the next piece of yarn if they ran out halfway through the square. The multicoloured squares will also go toward making friendship blankets for the less fortunate.

“My purpose and vision for today is that each of you will go into the world, get all your friends together, teach them what you learnt and crochet blankets for the less fortunate,” Heather said.
After the meeting, crocheters received a pattern for beanies for premature babies because one of the women spoke of a doctor she knows who told her she needed about 200 beanies for the babies.
The next meeting is in January, and interested parties can book their space for R200 with Heather on 083 580 4756.
