Landmark building now a mini mall

The mall aims to preserve the heritage of the building while also putting it to good use.

The old Standard Bank building on the corner of Voortrekker Road and Prince George Avenue has been transformed into a high-end mini-mall.

The official opening was on December 1, and the ribbon was cut by Julie Christou from Patrick and Patterson Properties, and the new owner’s son, Sifiso Clement.

The new mall, KTS Mini Mall, was developed by Bredia Trading and Projects to preserve the history of the building while also putting it to use.

The mall features eight stores. A home goods store and a nail bar have already opened and is wheelchair accessible. These stores utilise solar power to beat load-shedding.

“We wanted to bring the town back to life and preserve the heritage of the building,” Sifiso said.

The building was bought on auction in April, and construction inside started in June. It was one of the first buildings built in Brakpan in 1912 and started renting out to Standard Bank the very next year.

It’s a landmark of the town, which is why the new owners wanted to preserve the outer facade. Other features they included were a prayer room for Muslim employees and a small courtyard garden for relaxation.

The largest space is in negotiation for rent with a major clothing retailer, and most of the stores already have renters who should move in soon.
