Vorster determined to win title

The road to a championship fight has now become longer.

Despite losing the national slap fight championship by what seemed like a controversial decision to the crowd that was present in Dalview last month, Pieter “Bulldog” Vorster is confident that he will get his shot at the South African title this year.

“I’m still going for the title,” he said.

The local fighter was far from pleased with the judges’ decision from his semi-final against Herme Visser.

“I wasn’t happy about the decision,” he told the Brakpan Herald.

“If you watch the video of the fight you will see what happened. I knocked him down in every round. I was very disappointed. There were so many people from Brakpan standing behind me.

“All my supporters were unhappy about the decision. But you know it happens all over the world where you get questionable decisions and guys lose by one point.”

The road to a championship fight has now become longer.

Vorster will have to wait for the other semi-final which will be on March 30, in Benoni. The winner there will face Visser.

The Bulldog will then get a shot at the winner from that encounter.

“I think this time I will show them what I’m made of,” said Vorster.

For now, the Brakpan man is training as he is on standby in case one of the fighters due to compete on March 30 cannot make it.

In Vorster’s mind, there is one thing he is certain of and that is he will be South African champion this year and it is just a question of when it will happen.

“I’m ready for anyone for my next fight,” he said.

“Watch this space. I will be ready. The Bulldog will come back with a big bang. I’m training now to knock a guy down. He must sleep.”

Vorster sees the national title as a stepping stone to fighting for international accolades abroad. He realises for that to happen he will need plenty of support.

“I need sponsors. Yes, I have some sponsors but I need more as I will have to fund myself to go fight overseas,” he said.
