Brakpan Rugby Club players set to tackle the year

"It was a great outing as the coaches got to test the different combinations in the first run out of the year."

Brakpan Rugby Club’s new coaching staff had an opportunity to have a look at their 2024 squads at the Nigel Rugby Day on Saturday.

Brakpan’s senior players were split into two teams, which were the Brakpan White side and the Brakpan Green team.

The White team were comfortable winners as they thrashed Benoni’s first team 41-0. The Green side had a close game against Meyerton’s first team.

They edged their opponents 14-10. Brakpan’s U21 side were also at the event. They thumped Meyerton’s second team 48-3.

“It was a great outing as the coaches got to test the different combinations in the first run out of the year,” said Brakpan’s vice-chairperson Sarel Korf.

“There are a lot of possible combinations during the season. I know these are not the teams we will face in the Valke Peregrine League but the matches allowed the coaches to test out the different combinations on the field.”

Brakpan players managed to get some much-needed game time ahead of the Presidents Cup which kicks off on April 6 with a home game against Sasolburg.

The cup competition will be played throughout next month and many fans will be interested in seeing how well the club will perform, led by new head coach Regardt Botha. Botha would have liked what he saw in his players as he continued to prepare the first team for the season.

“Saturday’s matches gave answers to some of the questions the coaches had,” said Korf.

“The players got to know each other in proper game situations. So it was a good outing, Now we can take it forward and start preparing for the President’s Cup.”

Korf did point out that although the teams did well, it is too early in the year to get carried away.

“It is still the pre-season so there isn’t too much to read into it,” he said.

Botha has previously told the Brakpan Herald that he would like to see the club reach greater heights.

“In club rugby we would like to play in the Gold or Community Cup. So that’s the main goal, getting guys exposure playing in the Gold Cup and different sides in other unions.

“Gold would be the goal, either this year or next year. Just to be competitive and get guys more exposure. We also want to create a winning culture,” said Botha.
