Foursome arrested for fake number plates

The foreign nationals were unable to produce identification and told EMPD officers their passports had expired.

Fraudulent number plates landed four undocumented immigrants in additional trouble with the law.
The men were arrested by the EMPD in Brakpan on Sunday.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, officers from the tactical response unit received information at about 11:30 about a blue Toyota Corolla used in the commission of an armed robbery.

The officers spotted the vehicle at the R23 and R550 intersection, near Tsakani, soon after.

The vehicle was stopped and the men were asked to produce identification. They told the officers their passports had expired.

“The vehicle was searched and a pair of new number plates were found. When the driver was questioned about them, he said he did not know as the vehicle is used for e-hailing services,” said Thepa.

A check on the vehicle yielded no suspicious results.

“The number plates found in the vehicle were circulated and there was no information on them,” added Thepa.

The men, aged between 24 and 41, were arrested and detained at the Brakpan Police Station.

The Corolla was impounded.
