Spaza shops reminded to register their businesses

As part of the City of Ekurhuleni’s ongoing registration drive for spaza shops and food handling traders, owners are reminded to register their businesses before the looming closing date.

The registration process will run until December 13. Business owners can be assisted at their nearest customer care centres from 08:00 to 16:30 from Monday to Friday.

To register, spaza shop and food-handling business owners must submit their completed applications with all the necessary documents at the designated customer care centre. Business licences will be issued to qualifying businesses in line with the Business Act, 1991, (Act 71 of 1991).

All spaza shops and food-handling businesses must meet the following minimum requirements for registration:
• Completed business licence application form;

• Appropriate zoning certificate or written consent approval;

• Certificate of Acceptability (health standards);

• Approved building plan and occupancy certificate;

• Certified copy of the title deed or letter from the landlord if not owned;

• Identity document (for South African residents);

• Work permit or letter from the Department of Home Affairs (for non-South African residents);

• Registration with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC);

• Latest municipal account statement for the business address;

• Tax clearance certificate from SARS.

The registration centre for Brakpan is located in the rates hall at the Civic Centre along Escombe Avenue. The advisor is Bianca Mathe. Any spaza shop or food handling business that fails to register or does not meet the health standards will face closure.
