SAPS warns motorists after drunk driver convicted
Law enforcement will be alert for drunk and reckless driving this festive season.
Detective Warrant Officer Martin Smit from the Brakpan SAPS secured a hefty sentence for a 53-year-old man convicted of drunk driving and reckless and negligent driving.
The driver appeared for sentencing on November 19 at the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court, where he received a R20 000 fine or eight months imprisonment. He was also slapped with an extended suspension of five years.
The driver was arrested on March 2 and detained at the Brakpan Police Station.
According to the police, he skipped a stop sign at high speed on the corner of Park and George streets. after which his bakkie hit a car, damaging both vehicles. The occupants of the car sustained injuries during the collision.
An EMPD officer attended to the accident and arrested the driver, who was found to have had a 0.25 alcohol level after being breathalysed by the EMPD officer.

A case docket was registered and assigned to Smit.
“The SAPS convey a strong warning to motorists as we enter the festive season that law enforcement agencies are up in arms and will not compromise the safety of law-abiding road users,” said Constable Audrey Buthelezi, the Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and corporate communications officer.
Contravening Section 65(1) (9) of the National Traffic Act 93 of 1996, which prohibits driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is a serious offence.
“No stone will be left unturned when ensuring the immediate arrest of perpetrators in this regard,” Buthelezi continued.
Brakpan SAPS station commander Brigadier Johanna Ngoma applauded the arresting and investigating officers for the achievement and welcomed the conviction.
