Letter: A champion for the Brakpan SPCA
"Her dedication to the Brakpan SPCA has been nothing short of extraordinary."
Tamaryn Lombard, Brakpan SPCA manager, writes:
In a world that often feels overwhelmed by its challenges, there are rare individuals who shine as a beacon of kindness, resilience, and selflessness.
For those who have crossed paths with Gerty Thomas, affectionately known to us as Tannie Gerts, her presence has been nothing short of transformative.
Tannie Gerty has filled a void in my life that I never thought could be mended, stepping into a space left vacant by loss and despair.
She has not only been a source of immense personal support for me but has also become a pillar of strength and love for the Brakpan SPCA, our community, and countless families in the area.
Tannie Gerty is a familiar face to mothers, fathers, and children alike – a constant in their lives, radiating warmth and care.

But her impact extends far beyond the surface. She has become my confidant, the person I turn to in moments of doubt, frustration, or joy.
Our cherished afternoon conversations, or “Gerty time” as I call them, are moments I treasure deeply.
They are raw, honest, and often a reminder that even in our struggles, we are not alone.
Her dedication to the Brakpan SPCA has been nothing short of extraordinary. Whether through her generous donations, her adoption of two beautiful animals, or her innovative efforts to rally support, Tannie Gerty has become a lifeline for the SPCA.
She has made the Devon Hulpsentrum a drop-off point for donations, organised and participated in events like our recent walk, and even spearheaded the mammoth task of moving our jumble shop to the mall.
Her boundless energy and commitment were evident at our golf day, where she hosted hole 18 with her incredible team, raising much-needed funds for our cause.
But what struck me the most was the heartfelt phone call she made, asking, “Tamaryn, are you coping?” It was a simple question, but it carried immense weight.
Her immediate response to my needs, filling the gaps without hesitation, showed her unwavering support and empathy.
Tannie Gerty does all of this not for recognition, rewards, or accolades but out of the goodness of her heart.
Her actions are a testament to the power of unconditional love and compassion.
She has touched countless lives, including mine and my son’s, and has become a symbol of hope in a world that so desperately needs it.
So, how does one say thank you to someone who has given so much? Words seem inadequate, but they are all I have.
Tannie Gerty, thank you for your kindness, for your strength, for your selflessness, and for being the remarkable person you are.
You are the heart of our community, the unsung hero of the Brakpan SPCA, and a source of inspiration to all who are lucky enough to know you.
From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of every life you’ve touched, both human and animal, thank you for being you.
Our town is a better place because of you.
