Brakpan SAPS confiscates over 200 liters of alcohol from illegal outlets

As alcohol is an instigator in many crimes, the enforcement of liquor laws is imperative.

Brakpan SAPS, on January 16, confiscated alcohol from non-complying and illegal outlets and, under the supervision of officers, poured the liquor down the drain at the police station grounds, with consideration for environmental factors.

They disposed of over 200l (217 960ml) of alcohol, as stated in the South African Liquor laws in Act 27 of 1989 and Act 2 of 2003, which controls the sale of liquor.

The liquor gets confiscated, a fine is issued for non-compliance, arrests are made and the outlets are closed for violating the above laws.

“It has been proven beyond doubt that liquor is a major driver of crime in society and an instigator in most GBVF incidents,” said Brakpan SAPS corporate communications officer and Sector 1 manager Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“The SAPS will continue clamping down on illegal and non-compliant liquor outlets and bringing the owners to the book. There is a need to regulate the use of liquor in our communities.”
