Car crashes into fence leaving Tweedy Park residents vulnerable

Residents fear for their safety.

Some residents of the cottages at the Tweedy Park Old Age Home are worried about their safety after a car crashed into the complex’s concrete fence during the early hours of January 15.

Residents suspected the car crashed head-on with the fence at around 01:15. Someone removed the vehicle from the crash site, with residents none the wiser.

One resident, Wynand Dercksen, who lives near the fence where the crash happened, said he woke up that morning, went outside, and was shocked to witness the state of the fence.

A concrete column was also damaged.

Another resident, Peter Raman, who went to the Brakpan customer care centre to report the incident and request repairs, says the broken fence leaves them vulnerable to thieves and robbers.

According to him, the customer care centre cited a lack of budget for not repairing the fence.

The City of Ekurhuleni was asked for comment, to which they responded: “The works order has already been sent to the Human Settlements Department, and work is expected to get underway at the end of January.”
