Brakpan SAPS puts Batho Pele principles into practice
The "people first" principles led the SAPS to provide services at the Ekurhuleni East College Brakpan TVET premises, so students don't get lost trying to find the station.
The SAPS has a role in upholding the Batho Pele principles in the context of law enforcement and ensuring public safety.
Brakpan SAPS demonstrated such principles by providing students at the Ekurhuleni East College TVET Brakpan Campus access to police services on January 28.
This was during their registration for their first semester of 2025 at the college situated in the Brakpan CBD. The CBD is in Sector 1, and as such the students were serviced by Sector 1 manager Constable Audrey Buthelezi.
Buthelezi provided document certification and affidavit services to the students for their academic registrations, payment arrangements by parents and NSFAS applications.
She was supported by CPF members who went around the premises alerting everyone that SAPS were available for them and standing at the entrance to prevent students from having to go to the station for the services.
Batho Pele principles are a set of guidelines and values for public service delivery that means “people first”.
“The SAPS has set standards for the treatment of the public and incorporated these standards with their code of conduct and values,” explained Buthelezi.
“The Brakpan SAPS bears proof that efficiency, savings and improved service delivery are on the agenda, by providing public services economically and efficiently.”
The SAPS approached the institution after detecting a need for their services at the college during registration periods and noticed how students and their parents, already pensioners from other provinces, got lost in town while looking for the station.
“With integrity and pride we will always commit to the Batho Pele principles of consultation, service standards, access, courtesy, information, openness and transparency, redress and value for money,” Buthelezi concluded.
More than 100 people were serviced at the college during the outreach programme. The institution’s officials showed appreciation for the efforts of SAPS and management.
