UPDATE: Water leaks must be addressed before lifts at Tweedy Park can be attended to
The safety of technicians is a concern because of multiple sources of water damage.
The CoE has cited water damage as the reason for the broken lifts at Tweedy Park.
The Brakpan Herald last week reported how the lifts at the old age facility, which have been out of order again for the past two months, were of no help when emergency services recently had to collect an elderly resident from the fifth floor of the complex.
“There was a water problem that came directly from the top of the lift shaft due to a burst tank, that flooded the shaft, damaging all the electrical components,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
“This resulted in damages at the top of the lift car, all the landings, and the controls inside the lift. Furthermore, there is water coming into the lift car and shaft due to broken windows close to the landings.
“To resolve the issue, the water leak at the top of the lift car needs to be mitigated with proper waterproofing, and all the broken windows need to be fixed.
“Once all the water issues have been addressed, only then can it be safe to conduct a full investigation to the extent of the damage on the lifts.
“The Human Settlement Department will attend to the building condition in order for the lifts to be attended to.”
