WATCH: Local activist invites youth to help clean up old library

The activist and author known for her book Brakpan Broom and awareness campaigns has big plans for the old library.

Brianna Mupaya, a 16-year-old local activist and author best known for her children’s book Brakpan Broom, is celebrating Youth Month by leading a cleanup at the old Brakpan Library.

She is calling on young people from the town to join her on June 20 from 08:00, or after school, to help clean the sidewalks around the burned library building.

“This site, which should stand as a beacon of learning and heritage, has sadly deteriorated. Water is leaking, the surrounding streets are overrun by weeds, the smell is overwhelming, and the building has become a hotspot for drug activity. This poses a serious danger to the community, especially the youth,” Brianna said.

“I ask you: is this what a heritage site should look like? Is this what Nelson Mandela envisioned for our future? I believe that infrastructure is the foundation of empowerment.

“I have engaged local businesses, volunteers, and the municipality, who have shown encouraging support. It’s not just about cleaning a space. It’s about restoring dignity, empowering youth, and proving that change starts with us.”
