Ekurhuleni urges calm as threats of service delivery protests circulate online

The City of Ekurhuleni warns residents to stay calm after threats of service delivery protests appeared on social media.

The City of Ekurhuleni calls for calm among communities amid threats of service delivery protests in various parts of the region.

Zweli Dlamini, the metro’s spokesperson, stated that the threats surfaced on various social media platforms over the weekend, and they were calling for massive protests on August 18 and 19.

He said that the viral social media messages were calling for all residents, including city employees, not to go to work and scholars not to attend school but to join the purported shutdown.

“However, as of this morning, things are normal throughout the city and the municipality remains vigilant in monitoring the situation,” said Dlamini.

Dlamini also said that the city is calling upon the communities of Ekurhuleni to remain calm and protect public and private infrastructure.

He added that they are also appealing that the officials are not intimidated and harassed but rather be allowed to do their work, which is to provide critical services to the people. Dlamini concluded by saying that if any incidents surface, communities are urged to report such to law enforcement.
