UN Ambassador inspires learners during school visit
Youth leader Lerato Maris engaged with learners, showing how international peace-building efforts can impact local communities.
United Nations Brand Ambassador Lerato Maris recently visited St Raphael’s Learning Academy in Brakpan. Known for her philanthropic work and leadership in youth development, the Sallies Village resident, who is also a Global Peace Chain Ambassador, used the visit to highlight the organisation’s mission.
According to Lerato, Global Peace Chain is committed to building resilience through a culture of tolerance, inclusivity and social unity across borders.
Her visit showcased how international diplomacy and peace-building initiatives can directly benefit local communities and schools.
“I had the honour to host amazing young minds and got to dive deep in how they view the world and see words such as peace, hope, inclusivity and diversity come into action, by them showing me what those words mean to them and how that can apply them in their own lives and society,” said Lerato.

“Seeing them learn so much about advocacy and applying leadership within the whole collective was definitely the highlight and I would like to thank the school’s principal, Ursula Namath, for granting me the opportunity to engage with the school.”
St Raphael’s Learning Academy focuses on creating an inclusive learning environment for children from all backgrounds, regardless of their financial or demographic circumstances.
“This binds the whole ideology of Ubuntu as the heart of what empowering and building a nation hones,” said Lerato.
The young trailblazer has been nominated for the 2025 Forty under 40 Awards, set to take place on October 18. These awards honour 40 outstanding young leaders under the age of 40 who have made significant personal or professional contributions in their fields.

Lerato is nominated in the Philanthropy and Charity category. She is grateful for the recognition, and acknowledged the United Nations for playing a pivotal role in who she is today, and her belief that universal peace is what everyone should strive for in every aspect.
“Leadership and excellence starts with shaping young minds to focus on a goal and a purpose greater than their own,” said Lerato.
“Anyone can choose to make a difference, but the main essence of such a deed is making sure that the power of paying it forward is a continuous act and that it leaves a legacy of an empowered and growing nation in excellence. Brakpan has a force of leaders. It’s time for them to reveal themselves and rise up for our nation.”
In addition to her recent nomination, Lerato also secured second place in the Free SA Young Leader Awards in the Politics and Government category.
