Weltevreden Landfill Site closed for second time in months
The municipality has advised customers to make use of alternative landfill sites following the latest closure.
The City of Ekurhuleni announced on its social media platforms today (February 13) that the Weltevreden Landfill Site is closed and operations remain suspended until further notice.
As previously reported by the Brakpan Herald, operations at the site were halted last year due to escalating dangerous working conditions resulting from illegal mining activities and territorial clashes between illegal miners and waste reclaimers.
The landfill was closed on December 8 to protect employees and clients from potential harm. The site was partially reopened on January 23, following a law enforcement operation to clear it of illegal miners and restore a safe environment. It was opened to the public on January 26.
It is believed that its latest closure may again be due to the presence of illegal miners in the area. Comment is awaited from the City of Ekurhuleni.
Customers are advised to utilise alternative landfill sites nearest to their collection areas.
Operating landfill sites include:
• Rooikraal Landfill Site in Boksburg
• Platkop Landfill Site near Katlehong
• Simmer and Jack Landfill Site in Germiston
• Reitfontein Landfill Site in Kwa-Thema.
