K9 Unit assists in school safety operation in Brakpan
Local police joined community partners to search nearly 280 learners, confiscating prohibited items as part of efforts to promote discipline and safety in schools.
Vapes, cigarettes, lighters, and glue were seized during a Safer Schools Campaign operation led by Brakpan police, as learners were educated on responsible behaviour and medication safety.
Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi, together with CPF members, Siyabangena Patrollers, Bold and Brave Youth Foundation members, and the Graphite Security K9 Unit, conducted a school search at a local high school on February 25.
The search forms part of the SAPS Safer Schools Campaign focused on eliminating lawlessness within the schools by enforcing the law and instilling discipline in learners.
According to Buthelezi, all classes in the school and about 280 learners in grades eight to 12 were searched.
“Unwanted items found on and confiscated from learners were vapes, cigarettes, lighters, and glue,” said Buthelezi.

“The educators and learners were advised about dangerous weapons and the types of scissors recommended for school projects.”
Buthelezi emphasised that any learner who needs to bring medication to school must have a valid prescription and be fully aware of the type of medication they are taking.
She further explained that this is because learners use some pills to mix with certain drinks which can result in intoxication, leading to unwanted behaviours.
The school principal appreciated the intervention in the school and requested that it be regulated to maintain safety at the school.
